Date according to the old calendar: August 24. On this day, the memory of the Holy Martyr Eutychios, a disciple of the Apostles John the Theologian and Paul, is commemorated. Although he was not among the seventy apostles, due to his efforts, he was also named an apostle. Eutychios became a disciple of John the Theologian after hearing his sermon about Jesus Christ, and later, after meeting Paul, he preached with him in various countries. During his travels, he endured numerous tortures: the pagans, angered by his challenges to their beliefs, starved him, burned him with heated iron, and threw him into pits with wild beasts. During one of the tortures, a miracle occurred: a lion released on Eutychios spoke with a human voice and praised the Creator. Witnessing this, many pagans converted to Christianity. The saint ended his life as a martyr: he was sentenced to death. In Russia, on Eutychios’ day, the weather was closely observed: the day had to be calm and windless, or the flax seeds might fall. In the first week of September, the flax seeds ripened, and it was crucial to harvest them on time. If it rained on Eutychios’ day, it foretold a dry autumn and a good harvest the following year.
