The first photograph of St. Petersburg is considered to be a daguerreotype from the early 1840s, taken by the scientist Joseph Hamel. There is a version (which seems quite plausible) that he was simply testing the camera he assembled himself, as the photo depicting an annex of the Academy of Sciences is rather modest from an artistic point of view. No other photographs from that time have survived.
