Russian winemaking has a rather ambitious goal: to "stake out" a clearly defined place on the world winemaking map so that all wine enthusiasts can recognize in blind tastings—yes, this is Russian wine. Autochthonous viticulture and winemaking is one of the key factors in achieving this goal.
"Autochthonous grape varieties provide the opportunity to create completely unique wines, unlike any others in color, aroma, taste, and aftertaste. Their development is given special attention within the framework of Additional Quality Standards, developed by viticulture and winemaking councils in various wine regions of our country. In this direction, we can already highlight the now famous varieties such as 'Krasnostop' from the Don Valley and 'Kokur' from Crimea, which have given us magnificent wines from various wineries.
An important milestone in the history of Russian winemaking: in August, Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the creation of the National Center for Genetic Resources of Autochthonous Grape Varieties. Its tasks will include:
Forming and expanding a national catalog of the most valuable genetic resources of autochthonous varieties;
Their long-term preservation and reproduction;
Developing methods for storage, comprehensive evaluation, and use of the obtained samples, as well as searching for and selecting new ones;
Monitoring the condition of autochthonous varieties in their natural habitats and cultivation areas.
