What Can and Cannot Be Done on November 13, 2024
On November 13, 2024, we remember several of the Seventy Apostles, the close helpers and disciples of Jesus Christ — Stachys, Amplias, Urban, Narcissus, Apelles, and Aristobulus, as well as two monks of the Pechersk Monastery — Spiridon and Nicodemus. Traditionally, on this day, people would bring hens into the house for warmth, while in the north, they would go fishing for red fish.
The monks Spiridon and Nicodemus spent 30 years in the Near Caves of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, fulfilling their obedience of baking prosphoras. They accompanied their heavy physical labor with prayer and the singing of psalms. Spiridon was known for his miracles even during his lifetime. For instance, he managed to extinguish a fire from an oven with his mantle, thus saving the monastery from a fire; remarkably, the mantle was unharmed. After his death, Spiridon's fingers formed the sign of the cross and remained in this position for centuries. The relics of Spiridon and his companion Nicodemus are located in the Antoniev Cave of the Lavra.
