A rabies quarantine has been imposed in one of Moscow’s districts. The infection was detected in a regular residential apartment. Recently, cases of animal rabies have also been registered in other regions of the country, including Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol regions, and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, among others.
In the Belgorod region, it was reported that 41 cases of animal rabies were identified in 2024, often in pets, as well as foxes, farm animals, and even rats. In a village in the Pskov region, a woman was bitten by a rabid kitten, who had previously been attacked by a raccoon dog that wandered into the yard.
The most important thing to remember: if bitten by an animal — a fox, rat, dog — you must urgently seek medical attention. Rabies is incurable, and only a vaccine can save a person. Without it, death is inevitable.
In such cases, post-exposure vaccination is administered along with special antibodies that help neutralize the rabies virus before it reaches the central nervous system and symptoms appear — hydrophobia and others.
The vaccine is effective as long as the virus quantity in the body is low, preventing it from multiplying and reaching the central nervous system, which may take about 2–3 weeks. However, if bitten on the face, the virus may spread faster.
Unfortunately, once clinical symptoms appear, the disease becomes incurable. The closer the infection entry point is to the brain, the shorter the incubation period. Therefore, if bitten on the face or near the head, it is especially critical to see a doctor immediately.
The main reservoir of the rabies virus is bats — their bites are very dangerous to humans. However, recent observations indicate that not only dogs, cats, and mice suffer from rabies…
